September 2018 Construction Numbers

The City of Brantford released the September 2018 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $20.078 million for permits issued in the month of September.

The construction value attained in September 2018 is above the construction value attained in September 2017; while the number of permits issued has also increased in comparison to last year's figures.   In comparison with September 2017 construction values, an increase was seen in the Multiple Residential (New), Commercial and Industrial Sectors, while Decreases were seen in the Institutional & Government, Single Detached Dwellings (New) and Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sectors of construction,

The largest increase occurred in the Multiple Residential (New) Sector of construction. In September 2018 a total of five building permits were issued in this Sector for the construction of block townhouse buildings creating a total of 50 new dwelling units. Three of the building permits were issued for construction at 33 Jarvis Street, and two of the permits were for construction at 77 Diana Avenue. These five building permits had a total construction value of $9.854 million.   In September 2017 there were no building permits issued in this sector of construction.

A significant increase was also seen in the Commercial Sector of construction. In September 2018, ten building permits were issued for construction within this Sector, with a total construction value of $6.717 million, compared with September 2017, when there were five building permits issued in this Sector of construction with a total construction value of $0.762 million. The largest valued permit in this Sector was issued to a numbered company to allow for an addition to a new hotel being constructed at 30 Fen Ridge Court which had a construction value of $6.000 million.

The largest decrease occurred in the Institutional & Government Sector of construction. In September 2018, there was one building permit issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $0.180 million, compared with September 2017, when there were six building permits issued having a total construction value of $12.165 million.

Other noteworthy building permits issued in September include a permit to complete alterations to a manufacturing facility at 59 Roy Boulevard, which had a construction value of $1.250 million, and a permit to complete alterations to a medical office, located at 1325 Clarence Street, which had a construction value of $0.280 million.

The year-to-date construction value of $113.887 million is below last year’s total of $181.440 million, however for the year, a total of 785 building permits have been issued, which is comparable to the 788 permits issued in 2017 over the same time period.

The record-setting construction values attained in 2017 will be difficult to replicate, however the construction value of permits issued to date have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2018.
