The City of Brantford released the April 2019 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $8.852 million for permits issued in the month of April.

The construction value attained in April 2019 is above the construction value attained in April 20 18; while the number of permits issued has also increased in comparison to last year's figures. In comparison with April 2018 construction values, increases were seen in the Multiple Residential (New), Institutional & Government and Industrial Sectors, while a decrease was seen in the Single Detached Dwellings (New), Commercial, and Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sectors of construction.

The largest increase occurred in the Multiple Residential (New) Sector of construction. In April 2019, a total of three building permits were issued for new multiple residential dwellings, with a total construction value of $3.587 million, compared with April 2018, when there were no building permits issued in this Sector of construction.

An increase also occurred in the Institutional & Government Sector of construction. In April 2019, a total of two building permits were issued in this Sector, with a construction value of $0.728 million, compared to April 2018, when there were two building permits issued having a total construction value of $0.016 million. The largest valued permit in this Sector was issued to the Brantford General Hospital, to install mechanical equipment as part of an energy infrastructure renewal project, which had a construction value of $0.727 million.

The largest decrease occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. In April 2019, there were two building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $0.4 71 million, compared with April 2018, when there were four building permits issued, having a construction value of $1.718 million.

Other noteworthy building permits issued in April include, a permit for interior alterations to the former Sears store located at 84 Lynden Road, to create five new retail units, which had a construction value of $0.950 million, and a permit issued to Wilfrid Laurier University for interior alterations to the third floor at 1 Market Street, which had a construction value of $0.731 million.

The year-to-date construction value of $52.359 million is above last year's total of $32.112 million. For the year, a total of 362 building permits have been issued, which is an increase from the 277 permits issued in 2018 over the same time period.

The start of the 2019 construction year has continued to build off of the strong numbers attained in 2018. The construction value of permits issued have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2019.
