The high cost of living in large urban centres like Toronto has been pushing young people out for years, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend.

As more and more people have the option of remote working, or people are simply looking for other employment opportunities, smaller cities outside the GTA are beginning to look more attractive.

Huffington Post recently ranked the Top 5 best cities to move to from Toronto, using the criteria of communities within 250 km of the big city, and weighed them by two factors: the job situation and house prices.

Brantford ranked #3 on the list, ahead of Oshawa and Guelph, citing a healthier job market than Toronto and an affordable lifestyle for people telecommuting from the GTA.

  • Benchmark house price: $517,000
  • Average one-bedroom rent: $1,350
  • Ranking on the BMO Labour Market Report Card: 14 out of 33
  • Jobless rate: 6.1% (number of jobs down 3.4% from a year ago)

Money Sense Magazine has also recognized the Brantford and area market as the one of the best places to buy real estate in Canada for 6 years running (6th out of 35 cities in 2020, 3rd in 2019, 1st in 2018, 3rd in 2017, 3rd in 2016, and 4th in 2015).  In 2018 the editors noted, “…Brantford has diversified its economy and thrived. Its low unemployment rate and affordable yet steadily rising housing prices pushed the city to the top spot in our annual ranking of the best places to buy property in Canada's major urban centres.”
