The City of Brantford released the February 2019 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $8.172 million for permits issued in the month of February.
The construction value attained in the month of February is higher than the values attained in the previous three years, as well as above the past five year average for the construction value reached in the month of February.
The construction value attained in February 2019 is above the construction value attained in February 2018; while the number of permits issued has also increased in comparison to last year’s figures. In comparison with February 2018 construction values, increases were seen in the Single Detached Dwellings (New), Commercial and Institutional & Government Sectors, while a decrease was seen in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions), Multiple Residential (New) and Industrial Sectors of construction.
The largest increase occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. In February 2019, a total of twenty-three building permits were issued for new single detached dwellings, with a total construction value of $6.771 million, compared with February 2018, when there was one building permit issued in this Sector of construction having a construction value of $0.378 million.
An increase also occurred in the Commercial Sector of construction. In February 2019, a total of five building permits were issued in this Sector, with a construction value of $0.740 million, compared to February 2018, when there were twelve building permits issued having a total construction value of $0.330 million. The largest valued permit in this Sector was issued to Vicano Developments Inc., to allow for alterations to a general office located at 195 Henry Street, which had a construction value of $0.300 million.
The largest decrease occurred in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, and Additions) Sector of construction. In February 2019, there were twenty-nine building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a construction value of $0.360 million, compared with February 2018, when there were twenty-nine building permits issued having a total construction value of $1.734 million.
Other noteworthy building permits issued in February include a permit to complete alterations to create a new full service restaurant, located at 245 King George Road, which had a construction value of $0.260 million, and a permit to complete interior alterations to a manufacturing industry located at 70 Morton Avenue East, which had a construction value of $0.192 million.
The year-to-date construction value of $23.696 million is above last year's total of $20.869 million. For the year, a total of 113 building permits have been issued, which is a decrease from the 135 permits issued in 2018 over the same time period.
The start of the 2019 construction year has continued to build off of the strong numbers attained in 2018. The construction value of permits issued have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2019.
