
The City of Brantford released the June 2019 Summary Report on Construction Activity. The report shows a construction value of $11.194 million for permits issued in the month of June.
The construction value attained in June 2019 is above the construction value attained in June 2018; while the number of permits issued has slightly decreased in comparison to last year's figures. In comparison with June 2018 construction values, increases were seen in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) and Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sectors, while a decrease was seen in the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional & Government Sectors of construction.
The largest increase occurred in the Single Detached Dwellings (New) Sector of construction. In June 2019, a total of thirty-eight building pem1its were issued for new single detached dwellings, with a total construction value of $11.194 million, compared with June 2018, when there were two building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $0.520 million.
An increase also occurred in the Residential (Accessory, Alterations, Additions) Sector of construction. In June 2019, a total of sixty-one building permits were issued in this Sector, with a construction value of $2.050 million, compared to June 2018, when there were eighty-eight building permits issued having a total construction value of $1.684 million. As noted earlier in this memo, the largest valued permit in this Sector was issued to a numbered company for alterations to create dwelling units within the former St. Jude's Church, at 81 Peel Street, which had a construction value of $1.0 million.
The largest decrease occurred in the Industrial Sector of construction. In June 2019, there were four building permits issued in this Sector of construction having a total construction value of $1.014 million, compared with June 2018, when there were six building permits issued, having a construction value of $3 .516 million. In June 2018, a large value building permit was issued to Gizeh Packaging NA Inc., for the construction of a warehouse addition located at 40 Fen Ridge Court, which had a construction value of $2.00 million.
Other noteworthy building permits issued in June include a permit to complete alterations within a manufacturing building located at 111 Easton Road, which had a construction value of $0.80 million, and a permit to complete alterations within the former Sears unit at Lynden Park Mall, which had a construction value of $0.20 million.
The year-to-date construction value of $80.383 million is above last year's total of $59.377 million. For the year, a total of 573 building permits have been issued, which is an increase from the 485 permits issued in 2018 over the same time period.
The 2019 construction year has continued to build off of the strong numbers attained in 2018. The construction value of permits issued have provided encouraging figures, and staff remains optimistic that the construction industry continues to provide high levels of activity throughout 2019.
