Arthur C. Clarke once said, “All human plans are subject to ruthless revision by Nature, or Fate, or whatever one preferred to call the powers behind the Universe.”

When ruthless revisions happen in life we often have to step back and reevaluate. The next steps are not often clear-cut or uncomplicated. It can be easy to get mired in self-pity or to freeze and take no steps at all. But there are others who take the step forward and decide to seize the opportunity.

Jim Metcalfe is a person who chose the latter. Jim came into the Brantford-Brant Business Resource Centre (BRC) in the spring of 2019 after working almost 2 decades with one of Brantford’s premier electrical companies, Tottle Electric. Jim joined Tottle Electric in 2002, becoming a fully licensed electrician by 2006. Jim thought the stars had aligned. He was in an industry he loved, with a company he respected. That was until he started to have health issues. After multiple surgeries on his shoulders and legs, he knew he had to move on from a job he loved.

Jim had to reassess and make some critical decisions. Jim admits, “I did a lot of soul-searching about where I wanted to end up in my career." That’s when the seeds of entrepreneurship and business ownership first started to grow.

Although he knew business ownership would not be any less demanding, he knew as the business grew he would have more control over how he allotted his time. He saw the potential to do less physical work and take on a managerial role and hire an apprentice or journeyman.

Jim knew the first step to operate his own business was to obtain his Master Electrical License. He registered in the summer of 2019. Jim then applied to the Starter Company Plus Grant Program, a provincial grant program administered through the BRC. It is a program for individuals who are starting, expanding or buying a business.

Jim worked with the BRC to fulfill the requirements of the grant program by completing his business and financial plan and attending business workshops. Jim successfully launched his business, JDM Electric Ltd in August 2019 and obtained the $5000 grant, spending the funds on marketing and upgrading his tools.

JDM Electric Ltd. is a full service electrical company, offering professional, high quality services at a competitive price. The company is gaining market share and developing a positive reputation in the City of Brantford.
